Measuring and monitoring culture and climate is a starting point towarding changing and improving culture. Culture can be a strongly positive influence on the success of schools. However, likewise negative cultures can disrupt the best plans and intentions.

At the National Center for School Leadership, we believe that an active program of monitoring attitudes beliefs and feelings of your faculty, staff, students and parents is a vital component of continuous improvement. The type of knowledge assists school and school district leaders to assess leadership effectiveness and current organizational practices. Armed with this knowledge, schools and school districts can be better prepared in making changes as part of ongoing improvement initiatives.
Who do we survey?
The Center believes that it is important to understand the attitudes, beliefs and feelings of all constituents. Most commonly we work with schools to conduct assessments for teachers, other staff members, students and parents. Occasionally schools also need to conduct polls of community members who are not directly connected with the school. Depending upon the type of information the school or school district is seeking, we have an instrument to suit the purpose.
What does it cost?
We approach each client individually and tailor a proposal to meet the needs and budget of the school district. The cost of a survey will range in price based on size and scope of the services needed. A basic survey for a smaller district may be $3,500 while a more comprehensive survey for a large school district may run $20,000 to $30,000 while encompassing survey administration, focus groups, debreifing seminars and meetings among other services.

Morale of teachers often dictates the pace of change capable within our schools. Leaders must be appropriately sensitized to the needs and attitudes of their faculty.
Schools are too often "adult friendly" without being "student friendly" particularly at the secondary level. Student morale is a leading indicator of student achievement.
Parental involvement can be difficult to generate. Monitoring of parent needs and concerns is an excellent means of beginning the dialogue.
